Special to the Collegian

The Lorain County Community College Commodores volleyball team won a hard fought match against the Cuyahoga Community College Challengers on Wednesday September 10, 2014. The match was held in the Ewing Activity Center at LCCC.

The Commodores got off to a slow start in the first set allowing the Challengers to get a three point lead in the first three volleys, but quickly gained momentum and came out victorious with a score of 25-16. In the second set the Commodores started out strong and battled hard to the last point, but sadly lost 23-25 due to the intense pressure of the Challengers. The third set was marked by an increase in intensity from the Commodores which seemed to overwhelm the Challengers, netting a win for LCCC’s team 25-16. The Challengers tired in the fourth and final set, allowing the Commodores to exploit their weaknesses and exert their own strengths to win 25-15.

Top players in this match from LCCC were outside hitter Danya Corlews (Elyria High) with an extraordinary 17 kills, defensive specialist Page Elias (Brookside) with 21 digs, middle hitter Brenna Villwock (Lutheran West) with 7 blocks (3 solo and 4 assist), and setter Kady Whitsel (Brookside) with 32 assists.

“I thought Tri-C played much harder than the first time we’d seen them, and I thought maybe we were a little lax and weren’t playing as tough, or as hard as we could have played at the beginning of that match, and then it became a dog fight. When you’re going one and one it’s anybody’s ballgame. I thought we picked up our intensity in the third set and started doing the good things that we can do.” Coach Ted Whitsel summarized at the end of the match.

The Lorain County Community College Commodore Volleyball team’s next game will be at the Shannon McBride Invitational at Lakeland Community College Sept. 12-13. They will face Lakeland Community College on Sept. 17. They will return to the LCCC on Sept. 19 to face Notre Dame JV
