Tennis team swings for trip to regionals

By Elizabeth Syrowski
Staff Writer

As most of the winter sport seasons begin to wind down, the tennis team at Lorain County Community College began getting ready for its biggest match yet. The tennis team competed in the regional tournament March 4-7, which was held in Madison, Wis., at the University of Wisconsin. “This is only the second year LCCC has had a club tennis team, and there has already been so much improvement since last year,” said Jim Powers, special activities coordinator.
In comparison to last year’s record, the team has improved significantly, going from last year’s 3-14 record to this year’s 9-13 season. The tennis team still has multiple matches to play, including a home match on March 14 against the universities of Dayton’s and Toledo’s club tennis teams. The team also has an away match on March 27 against the University of Akron,  Ohio University, the University of Ashland, Miami University, and Bowling Green State University. “For the 2009-2010 (season) there are 18 members on the tennis team, and we were able to field an A team and B team to compete in matches, whereas last season it was hard just to find students to come out and play. It is a significant improvement in the program,” stated Powers. “There is a lot of talent on the team and they could really go far in the regional tournament this year.”

Not only does Powers have enough players to compete in multiple matches this season, he also took seven players to the regional tournament. “Brady and Murphy Dickason along with Brian Piazza are competing for the males at the regional tournament,” said Powers. Murphy Dickason competed in the men’s singles bracket, and also partnered with brother, Brady, for the men’s doubles bracket. Meanwhile, Piazza participated in the mixed double with partner Karen DeMaline. Overall, 32 teams from across the Midwest region compete in the tournament. Of these 32, only four teams will qualify for the national tournament.Competitors for the women included one of the team’s captains, Robin Bokor. Erica Mathie, Karen DeMaline, and Krystle Sparino also competed. Bokor and Sparino partnered up for the women’s doubles bracket, while Mathie played singles and DeMaline played mixed. The team played the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, the Michigan State B team, and the Illinois State B team. Results remain to be determined from regionals. Standing will be posted in the next issue.
