A worthy cause behind the mask

By Micayla Cook

A Masquerade Ball will not only get students excited, but will donate the proceeds to a worthy cause.

Each year the Role Players Association chooses a cause, or a non-profit organization to benefit from an event. This year they have chosen to raise money for the Special Olympics Hoops Tournament at LCCC.

Amanda Roos, president of the Role Players Association, said, “We volunteer at the Hoops Tournament every year. We wanted to give back because those three days touch our hearts each year in February.”

The Masquerade Ball will be held on October 24, from 7 p.m to 11 p.m in the Spitzer Conference Center, and the cost is only $2 at the door.

The dance will have a variety of different music, ranging anywhere from Techno and 80s to Hip Hop.  As for the attire, the Role Players Association requests it be formal. However, Roos says: “We want formal attire, but we aren't requiring it. If someone can't afford a dress or tuxedo in these financially unstable times we are understanding.”

Halloween costumes are also acceptable as long it's school appropriate.

“People need to remember this event is for Special Olympics and we want their outfits to be proper in public,” says Roos.

The association will be hosting contests, a Live Action Role Playing Game – Vampire The Masquerade, and will have different booths. Some booths will be selling things like candy and glow sticks, which profits will also go towards their cause.

Roos says: “We usually run parlor games and booths to give our guests other things to do to help benefit our cause each year.”

Hopefully there will be a great turn out, because this event will definitely shows that there is a  ‘fun’ side in fundraising.

Lastly Roos states: “We love the event and we want to give something back to the committee that helps bring it together each year with very limited funding.”
