A helping hand in domestic abuse

By Brian Smith
Staff Writer

A forum sponsored by Campus Security, HPER, student life, Women’s Link and Genesis House was held Oct. 22 in Bass Library. The purpose was to discuss how to help those that are suffering domestic abuse.
Virginia Beckam, Legal Advocate for Genesis House was the main speaker at the event. She spoke about the many warning signs to look out for when dealing with someone that is suffering domestic abuse.
“Look for words that will raise up red flags, such as ‘he is a control freak,’ or  ‘he is obsessed.’ People use these words to cover up their abuse,” said Beckam.

Looking out for these key words can lead the abused to help. Beckam pointed out that Genesis House is  the only domestic abuse shelter in Lorain County.

“It is always a welcoming place to take in victims of abuse,” said Beckam. “We took in 204 women and children last year. We don’t have a waiting list and every situation is dealt with uniquely.”

Beckam pointed out that those who think the shelter is small, should check out the Web site for Genesis house. “It’s really a good house with 22 bedrooms, cribs, clothing and all the essentials for living.”
Beckam also discussed how domestic abuse affects all age groups, even teenagers.

“Sometimes, I’ll receive a call from a teen, and I am surprised that the call with them is just like the previous call I had with someone who is middle aged.”

Jackie Simcik, a member of Campus Security works with many teens who suffer from domestic abuse. After the discussion, she gave words of advice to teens dealing with abuse.

“It is really important to seek advise from a responsible adult and tell them what’s going on,” said Simcik.
Simcik stressed that it isn’t enough to seek the council of other teens.

Domestic abuse victims can contact Genesis House at 440-323-3400. If the domestic abuse happens on campus, protection and escorts services can be provided by Campus Security. Incident reports can also be made on campus. Campus Security can be reached at 1-800-995-5222, ext. 4444, or in their office located in the Bass Library room 106.
