Earth Day brought plenty of green innovative ideas to campus.

Student Senate along with LCCC professor Ruby Beil’s, ecology classes put together an earth day celebration. This included the planning of trees, three Blue Spruce trees, and three White Oak trees.

The day kicked off with an introduction by Beil on how to plant trees. She explained that all the roots should stay intact and that the soil should not be mounted to high or else it would suffocate the tree.

Beil also talked about the garden committee, which is soon to be changed to the greenskaping committee because it includes landscaping. Anyone can become involved with the committee student or faculty. The committee discusses what the outside areas around campus should look like.

After Beil was done speaking Student Senate provided free fruit and some give away items. Theses consisted of bags that can be used over again, water bottles and shirts.

This is the first year the students have been able to help plant trees, but the third year there will be a garden planted. The shade garden will be planted on Friday 24 due to bad weather.

There is already a garden planned for next year to be dedicated to Dr. Robert Callaway. The planning of the Dr. Callaway garden will be more elaborate than the shade garden being planted this year, and students may even be asked to help design what the Callaway Healing Garden may look like.
“ I am excited about the planting of the trees and garden on campus, and knowing that students can get involved,” said Mackenzie Keys, Student Senate Financial Secretary.

There will be ongoing events to promote a green campus along with a new recycling bin behind the physical plant department. Mackenzie also added that there is talks of recycling bins that may be put out around campus.
